Military academies begin holding first gay pride events

More than six months after official repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” gay pride events at military academies are cropping up, the Associated Press reports:

Cadets in uniform at Norwich University, the nation's oldest private military academy, participated Monday in sessions about handling bullying and harassment as part of the school's first gay pride week. The events are believed to be the first of their kind on a military campus.

Until last year, only a select few at Norwich knew of the sexual orientation of Joshua Fontanez, 22, of Browns Mills, N.J., a past president of the student government who quietly laid the groundwork for the school's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Allies Club, which held its first meeting the day the law ended.

"The aspects of my sexual orientation, how that played in the military, that was something I was willing to sacrifice, being open versus serving my nation," Fontanez said. "It's something I feel I was truly called toward and truly loved, so it's great that I don't have necessarily to make that sacrifice."

Similar groups have formed at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

For many of the newly open student leaders, the changes brought by the end of "don't ask, don't tell" haven't overwhelmed, despite the years-long political wrangling that culminated in the policy change.

"It was definitely a big change, but it happened over such a long period of time for me that it didn't seem like that big of a deal," said Coast Guard Academy Senior Chip Hall, 21, of Monterrey, Calif.

The West Point Spectrum, modeled after the Coast Guard organization, is being formed with little fanfare.

"Everyone has been very professional here at the academy," said West Point Cadet Andrew Fitzsimmons, 19, a sophomore from Algonac, Mich. "It's been a very positive environment."

Ottawa: Marriage Proposal on the ice

From Yahoo Sports: On Saturday night at Scotiabank Place, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan named Alicia stood on the ice during the second intermission wearing a blindfold. When it was removed, she looked up at the video scoreboard and read a message from her girlfriend, an Ottawa Senators fan named Christina.

Schmaltzy music played. Out walked Christina. They embraced and had a brief conversation, as the crowd began to wise up to what was about to happen.

Christina dropped to one knee while holding Alicia's hand. The fans roared. She slid the engagement ring on, they shared a kiss and the Senators mascot proudly raised a sign that read "SHE SAID YES."

St Patrick's Day parades continue to exclude LGBT groups

Most of the St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York continue to keep Irish LGBT groups out, including the big one on Fifth Avenue on March 17 that is boycotted by most people who respect LGBT rights.

That’s why Irish gay activist Brendan Fay and Kathleen Walsh D’Arcy put together a St. Patrick’s parade in Queens that welcomes everyone.

The 13th Annual St. Pat’s for All Parade was held on March 4 in Sunnyside, Queens -- a neighborhood in the western portion of the New York City borough. The Irish-Americans there have broadly welcomed the parade since it began, and it has become a popular secondary walk for politicians wishing to play to two of city’s most powerful and visible constituencies: the Irish and the LGBT community.

New York City isn’t the only metropolitan to ban its LGBT citizens from the festive gathering. Organizers of Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade prohibited the gay rights organization, MassEquality, from participating in the event as well. Kara Suffredini, the organization’s executive director, said in a statement. "Public rejection by parade organizers is significant in that it’s emblematic of the more life-altering rejection our community members face every day."

At a time when gays and lesbians have the right to serve openly in the military defending the country they love, and the right to marry in the two states listed above - Massachusetts and New York - it's very backwards thinking to imagine that LGBT Irish Americans can't participate in a celebration of their heritage.

President Obama releases statement opposing anti-gay Amendment One in North Carolina

President Barack Obama today came out against the proposed constitutional amendment on North Carolina's May 8th ballot banning same sex marriages and civil unions, weighing into a fight in a key battleground state.

His campaign issued a statement saying the amendment was discriminatory.

“While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples,” said Cameron French, his North Carolina campaign spokesman. “That’s what the North Carolina ballot initiative would do – it would single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples – and that’s why the President does not support it.”

Michael Fitzgerald confirmed by Senate - 4th 'out' federal judge in the nation

Michael Fitzgerald, an out gay California lawyer, received overwhelming approval today from the U.S. Senate, with a 91-6 vote, for his nomination to serve as a federal judge on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California - making him the fourth out LGBT federal, lifetime-tenured judge in the nation.

The vote, which began a little after 2:24 p.m. today, came after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday, March 12, announced that he would be forcing debate and votes on 17 of Obama's judicial nominees if no deal was reached. On Wednesday, March 14, an agreement was reached between the parties' leaders to have the Senate vote in the coming weeks on 14 of President Obama's judicial nominees -- including Fitzgerald.

No one spoke in opposition to the nomination.

Senators voting "no" were Sens. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and David Vitter (R-La.).

Fitzgerald, who was nominated by President Obama on July 20, 2011 for the judgeship, had a hearing in October 2011 and was reported by the Senate Judiciary Committee to the full Senate without opposition on Nov. 3, 2011.

New gay hotel to open in Times Square: Out NYC

Click for larger view
New York City is set to welcome its first gay hotel.

The new complex on West 42nd Street, “Out NYC,” bills itself as a “place for gays and their friends and family to have a good time, to stay, play, eat, relax and revive,” according to owner Ian Reisner.

Reisner told 1010 WINS’ Al Jones that he prefers not to call the new place a gay hotel, but rather a straight-friendly hotel catering to the gay lifestyle.

“We’re built as a gay-oriented hotel, where straight friends and family can come in and enjoy themselves as well,” Reisner said.

Rooms at the mid-town Manhattan hotel will go for between $200-300 per night and come complete with nightclub, bar, cafe, restaurant and a 5,000 foot wellness center.

Reisner said the atmosphere at the “urban resort” will “feel almost like a cruise ship” for “everyone to enjoy and relax.”
